Request a current condition report and ask whether it was prepared by the auction house or a third party. Clarify attribution language, dimensions, medium, signatures, inscriptions, provenance, exhibition history, literature references, restoration, and whether additional images are available.

Understand the total cost
Ask for the buyer’s premium at your bidding level, online-platform surcharges, taxes, currency conversion, payment fees, storage charges, export costs, and shipping. Calculate an all-in maximum rather than focusing only on the hammer price.
Confirm accepted payment methods and deadlines. High-value lots may require identity verification, references, deposits, or wire transfers.
Understand fulfillment and remedies
Determine who packs and ships the property, who bears risk during transit, whether insurance is included, and when title transfers. Read the auction house’s authenticity warranty, return limitations, dispute process, and governing law.
If any answer is material to your decision, obtain it in writing before bidding.
